Temporomandibular joint measurement – digital precision with DMD

Digital perfection for your jaw function

Why the Digital Mandibular Device (DMD) enables absolute precision in modern functional diagnostics and CMD therapy.

The evolution of TMJ measurement

In conventional dentistry, the position of the lower jaw was often determined manually using wax plates or mechanical “facebows.” These methods are prone to error, as they can only statically represent the dynamics of the muscular system and the fine nuances of joint movement.

The DMD system marks a paradigm shift. As part of our functional analysis, we rely on one of the most innovative technologies to not only record your jaw movement but to make it mathematically calculable in a high-precision digital 3D model.

The centerpiece: Magnetic field technology

What distinguishes DMD from all other systems is the method of data acquisition. While conventional devices often require heavy, restrictive frames on the head, the DMD system operates completely freely and without contact.

  • Minimalist: Two tiny, feather-light “marker tools” are fixed directly near the teeth. No heavy bows.
  • Natural dynamics: Since you can hardly feel the system, we can record real, natural chewing movements and swallowing processes for the first time. No mechanics hinder your natural range of motion.
  • 6D precision: The system captures movements in all three planes (translation) and simultaneously all rotational movements (rotation). With 66 measurement points per second, a seamless digital trace of your dental identity is created.
A gloved hand holds a cotton swab with a white substance near a woman wearing a blue shirt. The woman's face is softly blurred in the background, suggesting an upcoming medical or cosmetic procedure. A woman with blonde hair sits in a clinic and holds a thin medical tube in her mouth. In the background, a blurred computer monitor shows a close-up medical image, likely related to a dental or oral examination. Close-up of a person's mouth held open with a plastic dental cheek retractor to expose teeth and gums for an examination or DMD treatment. The lips are spread wide so that the upper and lower teeth are clearly visible for digital precision.

The range of services: What DMD does for you

Within our Dental Balance Control philosophy, the DMD system is our most important tool for various specialist areas:

  • Innovative functional screening (CMD check): Within a few minutes, we objectively determine whether your masticatory system is healthy or whether craniomandibular dysfunction (CMD) is present.
  • Radiation-free joint space analysis: We see exactly how much “space” your joint has and where it is being compressed by misalignments – completely without radiation exposure (unlike X-rays or CBCT).
  • Determination of the therapeutic position: For pain patients, we find the mathematically certain position in which the muscles are relaxed and the joint is relieved.
  • Interference-free dentures: Through the direct interface to CAD systems (such as Exocad), the dental technician receives your real movement data. Crowns and bridges are designed to fit perfectly from the very first second.
  • Digital orthodontics & aligners: We plan tooth movements not just according to aesthetics, but strictly according to your individual joint path. This protects you from long-term consequences for the joints.
A digital tooth model in exocad software shows a color-coded top view of the lower teeth, highlighting the pressure points of the bite in blue and red. The user interface shows various controls and icons on the right side and tool options on the left side. A digital tooth model on a purple background shows upper and lower teeth in white and yellow with blue contour lines. Elements of the exocad software interface, tools, and adjustment sliders are visible on the left and right sides of the screen. A screenshot of the exocad dental software shows a digital 3D model of the upper and lower teeth in blue, yellow, and beige layers against a purple background. Menus and tools are visible on the left and right sides of the screen. The exocad logo is at the bottom right.

Why DMD enables digital precision in the micrometer range

  1. Magnetic field precision: The system captures deviations in the micrometer range that are invisible to the human eye.
  2. Real-time simulation: We can simulate on the digital model how a change in tooth position affects the joint – before we work on the actual tooth.
  3. Prevention of errors: We know with mathematical certainty that new dentures will not lead to CMD, as they have been designed within your natural functional limits.

Perfectly fitting results: From the scan to the perfectly seated splint

Thanks to open XML interfaces, the DMD data flows directly into our digital production chain. We replace “average values” with your real anatomy. The result is a congruence between the virtual model and your real movement that was previously technically impossible. Precision you can feel. Measurement data is the basis, but your well-being is the goal. The DMD system is our “eye” to make the causes of your complaints visible. On this basis, we develop your individual therapy plan.

Measurement data alone cannot guarantee healing.

Technology needs expertise

We are proud to use the DMD system, a high-end technology that takes precision in functional diagnostics and the quality of CMD therapy to a completely new level. However, for us, this technology is a tool – a high-precision “eye” that allows us insights that were previously unthinkable.

A perfect result, however, requires more than “just exact measurement data.” Data without deep expertise in functional analysis and years of experience will not lead to a stable healing success.

At Praxis Baumstark, both merge:

  1. The digital foundation: Mathematically exact, individual movement data of your jaw using state-of-the-art DMD technology.

  2. The medical art: Expert diagnostics of this data and its translation into a holistic therapy plan.

  3. The expert network: To always remain at the cutting edge of science in the field of CMD, we work closely across Germany in an intensive exchange of experience with leading CMD experts. This continuous training and professional exchange guarantee you treatment according to the latest medical standards.

Only through this integration of high-tech, sound know-how, and supra-regional expertise do we achieve the quality our patients expect from us: a result that is not only technically perfect but feels natural to you and sustainably increases your well-being.
