You are standing in front of a wall of colorful tubes stretching for meters: \u201cExtra White\u201d, \u201cTotal Care\u201d, \u201cSensitive\u201d, \u201cOrganic\u201d, \u201cHerbal\u201d. Manufacturers\u2019 marketing promises miracles, but medically speaking, only a few factors on the back of the packaging are decisive.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Toothpaste is more than just a way to freshen breath. It is a pharmaceutically effective vehicle for delivering active ingredients to the tooth and mechanically removing biofilm without damaging tooth structure. Here is your medical guide through the ingredient list.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. The gold standard: fluoride<\/h2>\n\n<p>Let us start right away with the most important topic. Scientifically, there is no dispute: fluoride is the most effective active ingredient for preventing caries. If you brush without fluoride, you are giving up the \u201crepair mode\u201d for your teeth.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What fluoride does exactly:<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Remineralization:<\/strong> Our teeth constantly lose minerals due to acids (from sugar and bacteria). Fluoride promotes the reintegration of calcium and phosphate into the enamel. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Acid shield:<\/strong> Fluoridated enamel tissue is chemically more stable and only dissolves under higher acid exposure than untreated enamel.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bacteria brake:<\/strong> It disrupts the metabolism of caries-causing bacteria, so they multiply less effectively.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><strong>The right dose (guideline update):<\/strong> Recommendations have changed in recent years due to new studies. Look for <strong>ppm<\/strong> (parts per million) on the tube: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Adults &amp; adolescents:<\/strong> The standard is <strong>1,450 ppm<\/strong>. Anything below that does not provide sufficient protection for permanent teeth. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Children (0 to 6 years):<\/strong> There has been an important change here. Instead of the previously common 500 ppm, professional societies now often recommend <strong>1,000 ppm<\/strong> (children\u2019s toothpaste)\u2014but strictly dosed! \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>From the first tooth:<\/em> A rice-grain-sized amount (1,000 ppm).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>From age 2:<\/em> A pea-sized amount (1,000 ppm).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. The \u201cabrasion factor\u201d (RDA value)<\/h2>\n\n<p>Toothpaste contains fine cleaning particles (abrasives) to mechanically loosen deposits. The measure for this is the <strong>RDA value<\/strong> (Relative Dentin Abrasivity). <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Low (RDA &lt; 50):<\/strong> Ideal for sensitive teeth or exposed tooth necks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Medium (RDA 50\u201380):<\/strong> The standard for healthy teeth (good cleaning with minimal abrasion).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>High (RDA &gt; 100):<\/strong> Caution with many \u201cwhitening\u201d toothpastes! They do remove stains (coffee, tea), but with long-term use they also abrade healthy enamel. If you have sensitive teeth, you should avoid these products.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Foaming agents (surfactants)<\/h2>\n\n<p>Foaming in the mouth gives us a feeling of cleanliness. This is caused by surfactants such as <strong>sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS)<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Medical note:<\/em> If you frequently suffer from small, painful blisters in the mouth (<strong>aphthae<\/strong>) or very dry oral mucosa, you should choose a toothpaste <em>without<\/em> SLS. This substance can further irritate sensitive mucosa. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Additives: useful or marketing?<\/h2>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Zinc:<\/strong> A very useful additive. Zinc compounds have an antibacterial effect and help slow the formation of tartar and reduce bad breath. (Note: zinc in toothpaste is generally not recommended for children).  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Chlorhexidine:<\/strong> Only included in special medical toothpastes. It helps in the short term with acute gum inflammation, but is not suitable for long-term use (risk of staining). <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><strong>Conclusion:<\/strong> Do not be dazzled by terms such as \u201cpearl extract\u201d. Look at the back: <strong>1,450 ppm fluoride<\/strong> and a <strong>medium RDA value<\/strong> are the best choice for a healthy adult. Do you have specific issues such as sensitive teeth?
